How do you seal Eco Pour®?

A Step by Step Guide to Sealing Eco Pour

We are often asked the questions - Do I need to seal my eco pour creation? and How do I seal it?

In this guide, we will help you to decide whether your artwork needs to be sealed and how to seal it properly. So let's get started...

Firstly - What is Eco Pour?

Eco Pour is an environmentally friendly, non toxic, water activated casting powder. it contains no harsh chemicals or solvents. You just add water and pour! It is a versatile, eco friendly product and can be used for a wide range of applications including coasters, candles, jewellery, vases, soap dishes and more (anything really your heart desires!)

Do I need to seal Eco Pour?

Eco Pour once cured is extremely tough and durable. It is heat and flame resistant (so can be used for candles) and is UV Stable so will not fade in sunlight. However, once cured, it is a porous material so it isn't waterproof or weatherproof. If your creation will come into contact with water or is for use outdoors then we recommend to seal your project. Or if you have painted onto your eco pour surface with for example acrylic paints or want a soft sheen finish, then sealing is a great idea for this too.

Otherwise, it isn't necessary to seal it but you may choose to do this for extra protection.

How do I seal Eco Pour?

We have the prefect sealer for use with our Eco Pour (you can find this here along with more information) - Eco Pour Sealer This is a UV stable, all-in-one glue, sealant and varnish and can be used for a wide range of uses.

Eco Pour Sealer

Follow these steps to effectively seal your Eco Pour and make it waterproof:

Step 1: Clean the Surface

Before sealing, ensure that the Eco Pour surface is clean, dry and free from any dust, dirt or debris.

Step 2: Apply the Sealer

Eco Pour Sealer can be applied by either painting directly onto the surface with a paintbrush and can be watered down for a thinner application if needed. You can also add a thinner mix of the sealer to a spray bottle to apply easily by spraying onto the surface. A roller can be used for larger pieces. We recommend to apply multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat for better results and avoid any pooling of the sealer on the surface, make sure you spread it evenly.

Step 3: Allow Sufficient Drying Time

After applying the sealer, allow it to dry completely. We recommend at least 2 coats. Leave 1-2 hours between coats and 12-18 hours for the final coat to be fully dry. Avoid using or placing any objects on the sealed surface until it is fully cured.

Step 4: Test the Waterproofing

Once the sealer has fully dried, you can test the waterproofing. Pour a small amount of water onto the sealed surface and observe if it beads up or is absorbed. If the water beads up, it indicates that the sealer has effectively created a waterproof barrier. However, if the water is absorbed, consider applying an additional coat of sealer.

There we go!

Sealing Eco Pour is quick and easy but is a crucial step in protecting your valuable items from water damage. By following the step-by-step guide outlined in this blog post, you can effectively seal Eco Pour and make it waterproof. Remember to apply your sealer evenly, apply it correctly following these instructions and allow sufficient drying time.

With proper sealing, you can enjoy the beauty and durability of Eco Pour for years to come.
